Uk and continental excursions this March
Tues 4th march
Hampton Court Palace
To visit Hampton Court Palace with a City & Village Tours Guide is to take a magical journey through 500 years of Royal history. This is not just a bricks and mortar tour, we paint the picture of the former occupants and their lifestyles. This is a great choice for the winter months when there are fewer tourists and roaring fires are lit adding immeasurably to the atmosphere. On our day at the Palace you will see a lot without walking to far. We begin with the Tudor Apartments including Henry’s Great Hall and Chapel Royal. Williams III’s private apartments are a complete contrast. Our tour will lead you through the changes in court behaviour and etiquette that are reflected in the design on this part of the Palace. At various points the rooms come to life as we encounter characters in period costume. We stay at the Palace for lunch; there are a couple of cafes to choose from. After lunch we’ll split into two smaller groups. While one group visits the fabulous Great Kitchens where fires roar and cauldrons boil in preparation for a Tudor banquet, our Guide will take the other half on a tour of the more intimate Georgian rooms. You’ll see them furnished as they were for George II and Queen Caroline during a time when tales of scandal shook the royal court – you’ll hear every juicy detail. (Includes entrance and guide for the day)

Faith, Hope & Charity
The City, the East End and the West End each contribute to our story, so next by coach to hear of a panoply of philanthropists including George Peabody, Dr Barnardo, Fred Carrington and General Booth. Charitable work was rare way for women, especially in the nineteenth century, to undertake useful and challenging work so we also learn about Clara Grants Farthing Bundles and the prison work of the Quaker Elizabeth Fry. We lunch in Bloomsbury where there is a good choice of pubs and cafes. London in the eighteenth century was a swirling mass of contrasts. A rowdy gin-swilling public rubbed shoulders with gentle folk, keen to do good work. The sight of dead and dying babies abandoned in the streets horrified Captain Thomas Coram. In 1739 he established the Foundling Hospital which looked after more than 27,000 children until its closure in 1953. During our afternoon visit to the museum you will see a remarkable art and music collection today shown in the rococo rooms. (Includes guide for the day).
