Today we visit Marlow, the enchanting Hambledon Valley, Henley-on-Thames and Stanley Spencer’s Cookham and take a late afternoon cruise along one of the loveliest and laziest stretches of the River Thames from Maidenhead to Marlow. In the afternoon we drive through Hurley and Quarry Woods to Cookham, a pretty village with a mix of rustic workman’s cottages, grand houses and a pleasant High Street. We board our pleasure cruiser at Boulters Lock near Maidenhead for our 2 hour Beechwood Beauty Boat Trip. There is a bar on board where you can buy hot and cold drinks. We wind our way upstream where the Thames cuts through the Chilterns forming a beautiful deep gorge with Beech woods towering above us. This is the stretch of river famous for Swan Upping, The Wind in the Willows and Three Men in a Boat. Enjoy a day visiting the Suffolk coast – one of the most fragile regions in Britain. Attacked by the Romans and the Danes today the aggressor is the most formidable yet.
We head off toward our first stop at Orford an attractive village with a castle keep built by Henry II. You may like to visit one of the smokeries and take home a Suffolk treat.
Off again via Snape to Aldeburgh, a town truly threatened
by the awesome power of the sea. The Moot Hall once in the centre of the town now teeters on the water’s edge. Man will not win this one. There is a timeless feel here where fishermen still sell their catch on the beach. The compact High Street is browsers delight with plenty of choices for lunch.

Hidden Essex & Secret Canal
During our morning coach tour we explore a lonely kingdom once terrorised by Vikings. The Dengie Hundred is to Essex what the Romney Marsh is to Kent. Remote and eerily beautiful with a history all of its own. From the wide horizons of the peninsula to the sweet tang of the sea this is a pleasing mix of countryside and coast. A quite magical highlight of the tour is a visit to an ancient chapel on the headland. Built more than thirteen centuries ago St Peter’s-on-the-Wall is a simple, beautiful and very spiritual place. It is a 10-15 minute flat walk each way from the coach along a farm track with panoramic sea views. Folk who prefer not to walk can stay on the coach. We lunch in Burnham-on-Crouch where the quay is a mix of colour washed captains houses and clapboard cottages looking out over a forest of bobbing masts. There are pubs and cafes or you can bring a packed lunch. The Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation meanders through the tranquil, willow lined Chelmer Valley just 30 miles north east of London. Built 200 years ago to link Heybridge on the Blackwater Estuary with horse-drawn barges today the clear, clean waters are rich with fish and the abound wildlife. We board for a two hour trip downstream through Rushes Lock to Ulting’s tiny church in its sylvan setting among gnarled old trees on the waterside. On board you can buy tea and a selection of delicious homemade cakes. We return to Paper Mill Lock ready to head home. (Includes Boat Trip)
